- Today is Presidents Day. But did you know that on this day in 1792 President George Washington signed the Postal Service Act? This was the legislation that created the U.S. Postal Service and outlined Congressional power to establish official mail routes. It also allowed newspapers to be included and made it a crime for postal officials to open anyone's mail.
