5 Things to Know Today

Here's Monday's roundup of events, information and trivia.

  1. The weather should be mostly sunny and a high of 77 degrees. That's great weather for the end of a three-day weekend for those of you lucky enough to have off work.
  2. Today is the last day for the 2011 Florida State Fair. If you haven't visited yet, this is your last chance until 2012. Bring an empty Pepsi can and get $5 off an armband. It's also "Student Day" with special discount prices.
  3. Early voting continues today in Tampa. On Saturday, 821 voters cast ballots.
  4. Residents angered over Gov. Scott's recent refusal of $2.4 billion in federal funds for high speed rail are set to today.
  5. Today is Presidents Day. But did you know that on this day in 1792 President George Washington signed the Postal Service Act? This was the legislation that created the U.S. Postal Service and outlined Congressional power to establish official mail routes. It also allowed newspapers to be included and made it a crime for postal officials to open anyone's mail.
