5 Things to Know Today

Here's Monday's roundup of events, information and trivia.

  1. Got an old mattress or lawnmower that's ready for the dump? If your home sits in the west half of Old Seminole Heights (west of Interstate 275, north of Hillsborough Avenue and south of the Hillsborough River), then this is your SWEEP week! Put unwanted furniture, appliances and large fixtures on the curb for pick up by the city. Check the City of Tampa's SWEEP calendar for other upcoming neighborhoods.
  2. Today looks to be another warm one with a high of 88 degrees and mild winds out of the southwest. If you're doing any yard work, don't forget your big floppy hat.
  3. If you took part in "Paint Your Heart Out, Tampa" on Saturday, send in your team's photos to mike.wells@patch.com and we'll feature them on the site.
  4. Monday night is 80s Night at The Castle in Ybor City. Dance away your Monday blues to videos from bands like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, New Order and Blondie.
  5. Check out the photo Wellswood resident Kitty Wallace submitted of the neighborhood peacocks.
    • Kitty: "The neighbors near the river get to enjoy the peacocks who grace our neighborhood. Here are the peahens out for a stroll. If you have not ever heard peacocks — they make a sound similar to what you might imagine a terrified banshee might make. On the afternoon of the big storm [earlier this month], two males were perched up on the short carport wall of a neighbor's house. A tree had been knocked down over the driveway.  As I passed, the peacocks shrieked.  It was an eerie moment."
