5 Things to Know This Weekend

Here's the weekend's roundup of events, information and trivia.

Saturday

  • The Tampa Firefighters Charity Fund hosts a 5K and 1-mile Fun Run to benefit Camp Hopetake, a camp for pediatric burn survivors. Registration starts at 7 a.m. The 5K begins at 8 a.m.; the 1-mile run begins at 8:15 a.m. Free food and drinks will be served at a post-run party, along with music and raffle tickets for prizes.
  • On the second Saturday of each month the Seminole Heights Bicycle Club leaves promptly at 8:30 a.m. from the Seminole Heights Garden Center, 5800 N. Central Ave. The pace is moderate (10-16 mph), the routes average 10 miles roundtrip and usually include a stop at a coffee shop along the way. Please come with your helmet on your head, air in your tires, and brakes that work, ready to experience the beauty of Central Tampa on two wheels.
  • D.W. Waters Career Center is celebrating their in their completely restored building (Old Jefferson Building) with a reception at 11 a.m. in the museum and short program at noon. 
  • The 30th anniversary of WMNF's Tropical Heatwave this year brings together more than 50 bands on nine stages throughout Ybor City. The Cuban Club's ballroom, cantina, and band shell on the patio kick off the festivities, which simultaneously spread to El Pasaje Plaza at 13th Street and 9th Avenue; New World Brewery at 1313 E. 8th Ave.; The Orpheum at 8th Avenue and 14th Street; the courtyard and acoustic stage at PLAY at 1701 E. 8th Ave.; and Crowbar at 1812 N. 17th St. Adult tickets are $30 in advance; $40 at the door. Youth tickets (ages 12 to 20) are $12.

Sunday

  • Tampa Catholic High School is pleased to invite 6th and 7th grade students and their parents to our annual event on May 15th, 1-3pm. Guests will have the opportunity to walk around the TC campus, talk to students, faculty, and administration and enjoy a variety of presentations. An optional Mass will be celebrated at noon.
