Vacant Nebraska Ave. Building Bought by Local Fast Food Chain

A group that includes an owner of a Salem's Gyros & Subs recently bought the commercial building in Old Seminole Heights.

The commercial building at was recently bought by one of the owners of Tampa-based fast food chain Salem's Gyros & Subs, according to the property's former listing agent, Linda Calebro-Kuder, broker/owner of Calebro and Associates

County and state records show that LG Tampa LLC — a group that includes a Salem's owner, Samir Layeb — purchased the property earlier this month.

Construction started on the Old Seminole Heights building at the corner of Nebraska and East North Street in 2007 and stopped by 2009. It has yet to be occupied.

Phone and e-mail messages from a Patch reporter to Salem's have not been returned. We'll report more details as they become available.

Definitely not wanted in our neighborhood. I live on North street several houses down and have lived in the area for over 30 years. I know of he many troubles that the other locations have had in the past and do not want this near my house! Unfortunately this lot has been an eyesore for a while! Initially vacant for years, then there was a fight over a previous owner trying to chop down the beautiful Oak to put in a car wash, then this building was built to be a sports bar, then someone wanted to make it a BBQ restaurant, now a Salems....please, please do not make it a Salems! I would rather the ugly, vacant building stay there than that!

I live a few streets down from where this Salems is trying to open and I feel it will set the community rebuilding program back. Fast Food places bring a lot of problems. Late hour business like this bring problems like trash, bad smiles, crime, loud music, etc. Salems is just not a neighborhood type of business. Businesses like this should stay on Hillsborough Ave. where they can compete with the big boys like Mc D's,Bk, Checkers, etc. It should not be alllowed to pick on small community business like The Five Coins, Elles, Mammas, etc. Salems wants to take money out of the community and send it to investors overseas and not put one red cent back into the neighborhood. Check out 7thAve off of Nabraska down near Ybor. That is what Chain business do to the area.I like Seminole Heights, reminds me of Mid-Town in Atlanta. Cool classic look on the inside Chains business on the outside. Now you cant buy a house in the area and if you do you are paying a arm and leg and a ear or 2. NO salems IN SEMINOLE HEIGHTS!!!

Good news folks. It's not too late to stop Salems drive-thru. City council met last night (Oct 11) and delayed decision on Salmes "special use application" (request for zoning change to allow a drive-thru) until next meeting which will be Nov 15, at 10am. City council spent considerable time discussing the fate of the beautiful grand oak tree that stands behind the building. By code you can't build within 20 feet of a protected tree like a grand oak. That building is 16 feet from the tree. But wait, it gets worse. When I saw the site plan projected on a large screen, I realized for the first time that Salems site plan reveals that cars will drive BETWEEN the building and the tree to get to the pickup window. Salems has a sketchy sounding plan to elevate the drive over the roots of the tree but there was lots of considered and thoughtful concern among city council members about the protection and well being of that grand oak. I am mounting a campaign to save that tree and to stop the drive thru at Salems. At the moment, my campaign staff consits of me! ha Who's with me? Save the tree! Stop Salems drive-thru! Jeff Fuller
