The Independent Alters Parking During Family Dollar Construction

News you can use: where to park during Family Dollar construction.

is having to make some adjustments while it's controversial new neighbors settle in.

During the construction of the new Family Dollar location on North Florida Avenue, the popular cafe, beer garden and hangout will lose the parking spaces that once lined the south side of the former , directly across the street.

A message on The Independent's Facebook page last week, however, cleared up any concern over the availablity of parking, with neighbor Praise Cathedral stepping to the plate to aid local business.

"Good News! We have secured a few parking spaces on the north side of "PRAISE CATHEDRAL" (sits caddy corner to our building at Wilder and Florida) during the time that the WSM building is under construction. Please use this lot before filling up the neighborhood," the message read.

According to The Independent's owner Veronica Vellines, the parking lot by the Family Dollar location is only temporarily closed while the retail store works on the building's roof and will become available again to Independent patrons in 3-4 weeks time.

"They tell me three to four weeks, so we're looking into having a valet on the weekends and trying to have options for people," Vellines said. "We have the new spaces that we're renting, but we're trying to discourage people from parking on the streets unless parking is full. In that case, we just ask people not to disturb our neighbors. Hopefully, we'll be back to normal in a few weeks."
