City to Paint and Repair Water Tower Welcoming Residents to Tampa

The "Welcome to West Tampa" mural will honor the neighborhood, according to city officials.

Earlier this week, Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced plans to paint the elevated water tower in west tampa to welcome residents and pay homage to the area's culture.

“When I think of West Tampa, I think about the social clubs and cigar factories, little league games, and community leaders like Charlie Miranda and EJ Salcines. This is an opportunity to tell West Tampa’s story, which is so ingrained in the fabric of Tampa,” said Mayor Bob Buckhorn in a news release. “It is just one way to honor the heritage and culture of the West Tampa community that continues to shape our city.”

Before the process begins, city officials plan to repair and re-coat the tank at a cost of $350,000. That work will begin in January, and should take about four months to finish.

The painting, which looks like an oversized cigar wrapper, will read "Welcome to West Tampa" across the water tower, and will be visible from I-275 and local streets.

Brothers Peter and Rolf Goetzinger were chosen to paint the image at a cost of $33,800 for the City of Tampa.
