Tampa's Urban Treasures on Display for 'Great Caper' at History Center

The event includes a scavenger hunt and mini photography lesson.

If you're a Tampa history or photography buff, grab your camera, clues and smart phone for a trek through some of the city's landmarks in Ybor City and downtown on April 20.

That's the date of the Tampa Bay History Center's "Great Caper: Photo Safari," which kicks off at 10 a.m. with a mini photography lesson from an expert at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts.

Next is a photo scavenger hunt through the Center's latest exhibits, "Florida Wildlife Corridor: The Photographs of Carlton Ward, Jr.," and "The Big Picture: A Selection of Cirkut Photographs from the Burgert Brothers Collection."

Attendees will then jump on the TECO Streetcar Line to find local landmarks, uncover clues, learn about the city's history and take photos of historical sites. Afterward at the Center, participants can enjoy crafts, prizes and activities.

The Caper is being held for the third time this year, said Jennifer Tyson, assistant curator of education at the Center, and wraps up at 3 p.m.

"I think what sets it apart is it's not just checking out one locale," she said. "It's an introduction to a lot of different urban treasures around Tampa that are not as well known."

Tyson hopes those who attend enjoy the ride and learn more about Tampa Bay's history.

"It's been growing by leaps and bounds, and that's one of the lures, too," she said. "It's not something that feels overwhelming for families. It's not a race."

The cost is $12 per child; $18 per adult, and includes streetcar fare and Center admission for the day. TBHC members receive a $3 discount for adults and a $2 discount for children. Pre-registration is being recommended.

The Center is at 801 Old Water Street. For more information, visit www.tampabayhistorycenter.org/caper, or contact Tyson at jtyson@tampabayhistorycenter.org or call (813) 675-8960.
