Get Out: Weekend Events Preview Jan. 27-29

Would you believe there's a fair amount of fun stuff to do this weekend besides Gasparilla? Opera, ballet, concerts, and even an Italian happy hour are part of the lineup.

Why go: Proceeds from the multi-day festival benefit Metro Wellness & Community Centers, St. Pete Pride and GaYBOR District Coalition. Held at various venues, including The Ritz YBOR and Amphitheatre.

Why go: The Straz Center presents two one-act operas. Set in Sicily, “Cavalleria Rusticana” tells the tale of a soldier who returns from war to find that he has lost his fiancée to another man and seduces her, ending in a confrontation.

"I Pagliacci" is a tragedy about a small village where the townfolk are excited about a clown troupe's arrival, but an undercurrent of jealousy, lust and revenge tear people apart.

Why go: Skipper’s Smokehouse local jamband Cope with the funk-rock mix of the Bird Street Players.

Why go: Jobsite Theater presents "The 39  Steps" by Patrick Barlow, based on the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock.

Directed by Katrina Stevenson and winner of two Tony Awards and two   Drama Desk Awards in 2008, as well as the 2007 Olivier Award. Mix a   Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have this fast-paced whodunit packed with laughs, more than 150 zany characters, an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers and  some good old-fashioned romance.

Why go: Attendees of this colorful brunch can enjoy live entertainment and a great view of the annual invasion of the pirate ship Jose Gasparilla and Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla.

The menu includes assorted danishes and bagels, imported and domestic sliced cheeses, seasonal fruit, scrambled eggs, link sausage, bacon, french toast, a carving station with Mustard-Rubbed Baron of Beef and Cider-Baked Boneless Ham, coffee, tea, spring water, juices, and a cash bar with Anheuser-Busch and Captain Morgan products.

Why go: Downtown Tampa once again hosts this festival of live entertainment and food along Ashley Drive, from Kennedy Boulevard to Cass Street.

At the Gasparilla Invasion Stage at MacDill Park (at Ashley Drive and Whiting Street), Danny Lozada y el Latin Band will perform from 11am to 3pm.

Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park will host three musical acts after the Parade of the Pirates as follows:

5pm to 6:30pm: C'NERGY
6:45pm to 8pm: Daniel B. Marshall
8:30pm to 10pm: Skycoasters

Why go: Cannons booming, the world's only fully-rigged pirate ship, the Jose Gasparilla, sets sail across Hillsborough Bay and into Seddon Channel today as part of the annual Gasparilla tradition. Other boats intent on defending the city from the invading pirates of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla will sail to meet the ship before joining it on its journey to the Tampa Convention Center.

There, the mayor typically surrenders the key to the city about 1pm, signalling the parade along Bayshore Boulevard to begin.

Where/When: Bayshore Boulevard at Bay to Bay Boulevard, to Ashley Drive at Cass Street, Saturday, 2 p.m.

Why go: Try to catch beads, "doubloons" and other pirate treasures tossed from the floats of this Mardi Gras-style parade spanning 3.8 miles along Bayshore Boulevard.

An annual tradition, this year's parade features more than 90 floats, 14 marching bands and more than 50 krewes, including those behind the city's pirate invasion, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla.

The parade begins at Bayshore and Bay to Bay Boulevard. It continues north on Bayshore to Brorein, then onto Ashley Drive, where it ends at Cass Street.

Viewing is free, although there is reserved bleacher seating available for $30.

Why go: Scott M. Deitche, author of Cigar City Mafia and The Silent Don: The Criminal Underworld of Santo Trafficante Jr., leads a two hour walking tour to old gambling palaces, street corners where some mobsters met their demise, and restaurants where wise guys held court. Tickets must be purchased by January 26.

Why go: Lucy Tight & Wayne Waxing are “Hymn For Her”, a band that hails from anywhere they can park their trailer.

H4H live, tour and record in their 16 foot, 1961 Bambi Airstream (comes with dog and baby). Their new release, ‘Lucy & Wayne and THE AMAIRICAN STREAM’ was entirely recorded in their classic trailer on a coast to coast U.S tour. They stopped at various campgrounds and friends driveways between shows, set up their gear in their Bambi/home recording studio, rolled tape and rocked out. Armed with 2 bullet mics, a three-stringed broom handle/cigar box, banjo, dobro, bass drum, hi-hat, and harp, this ‘lil duo causes massive earthquakes wherever they play.

Where/When: Florida Museum of Photographic Arts200 N Tampa St, Sunday, 11 a.m.

Why go: Picking up where the "Part I" workshop ended, this workshop emphasizes photographic composition and introduces more technical skills.

Participants should bring prints of their favorite images made since the last class, their camera, camera manual, material to take notes, and lunch. Drinks will be provided.

Price: $55, $35 members

 

Where/When: David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, 1010 N W C Macinnes Pl, Sunday, 1 p.m.

Why go: This original, full-length classical ballet tells the swashbuckling tale of José Gaspar, Tampa's most famous pirate, complete with heroes, villains and undaunted love.

Proceeds benefit the Tampa Bay chapter of the American Red Cross, the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg, and Drew's Shoes, a charity that provides dance shoes to underprivileged children.
