Get Out: Weekend Events Preview Jan. 20-22

There's plenty to do besides the Children's Gasparilla Extravaganza.

Why go: Located from the 200 block to 300 block of Twiggs Street, the Tampa Downtown Market offers fresh, high-quality food from local farmers and gourmet products from local artisans. The market appears every Friday from October to May, weather permitting.

Why go: Recreational boat owners planning to participate in the 2012 Gasparilla  Pirate Invasion on Jan. 28 are invited to take advantage of "no-cost,  non-punitive, 15-minute checks" to avoid "potential sizeable fines for  outdated or missing safety equipment aboard their boats." This comes from  the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 79, which plans to offer Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Safety Checks.

Why go: We require helmets be worn on all rides and please check that your bike is in good riding condition - tires properly inflated, brakes working well.

On the third Saturday of each month, this ride leaves promptly at 8:30am from the Seminole Heights Garden Center. It's a wonderful ride through neighborhoods, waterfronts and urban areas with various terrain.

We have two groups you can ride with:

Intermediate: This is a moderately-paced ride, between 10-14 mph. The distance around 18 miles. We make our roundabout way to Davis Islands, do the perimeter and stop at a coffee shop on the island before heading back through Central Tampa. The is a very scenic ride and varies from leisurely to the opportunity to practice (or learn) urban riding skills. The ride leader will pace the ride according to the level of riders present on each ride.

Advanced:   This group is for the slightly more advanced rider, keeps a faster pace around 16-20 mph with no scheduled stops, and covers about 25-30 miles.

Where/when: Tampa Bay Times Forum, 401 Channelside Dr, Saturday, 9:30 a.m.

Why go: Lifestyle Family Fitness presents two and a half hours of group fitness classes such as Zumba, Body Combat, Sh'bam, and Body Attack, plus food, giveaways, and vendors to kickstart your New Year's fitness resolutions.

Where/when: Bayshore Blvd & S Albany Ave, Saturday, 11 a.m.

Why go: The city's annual festival of pirate trinkets and treasures -- a tradition since 1904 -- kicks off with vendors and activities for children, as well as this "safety rodeo" for anyone interested in learning how to bicycle safely with traffic.

Children will be fitted with a free new bicycle helmet they can keep (while supplies last), then use one of the rodeo's fun courses to practice their skills. Presented by the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Commitee of Hillsborough County and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Price: FREE

 

Where/when: Bayshore Blvd & W Bay to Bay Blvd, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Why go: Before next week's annual festival of pirate trinkets and treasures -- a tradition since 1904 -- enjoy a parade of little pirates, ages 5 and younger. These small buccaneers will show off their best pirate gear and specially decorated strollers, wagons and bicycles.

This mini parade ends at Howard Avenue. Children must have registered in advance to participate ; no walk-ins, please.

Where/when: Tampa Tribune, auditorium, 202 S Parker St, Saturday, 2 p.m.

Why go: Inkwood Books hosts this book signing and Q&A with the veteran newsman and host of "Hardball," who is touring to promote his latest book, "Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero."

Where/when: Bayshore Blvd & W Bay to Bay Blvd, Saturday, 3 p.m.

Why go: Enjoy a precision parachute jump from the U.S. Special Operations Command Jump Team before the Children's Gasparilla Parade begins.

Where/when: 2112 N 15th St, Tampa, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.

Why go: Part of the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival, this high-intensity musical is set in Hillsborough County during the 1930s.

Where/when: Bayshore Blvd & W Bay to Bay Blvd, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.

Why go: Say, "Yo, ho!" to the pirates of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, and reach for all the beads you can hold in this annual festival of pirate trinkets and treasures.

The parade heads north along Bayshore Boulevard from West Bay to Bay Boulevard and ends at Watrous and Orleans Avenues.

Where/when: 603 Channelside Dr, Saturday, 5:15 p.m.

Why go: Board the Yacht StarShip for a spectacular view of the Gasparilla Children's Parade fireworks display, along with three courses of fine dining and dancing. The ship boards at 5:15pm and departs at 5:45pm. It returns about 8:15pm.

Where/when: Bayshore Blvd & S Howard Ave, Saturday, 7 p.m.

Why go: Enjoy a dazzling fireworks display presented by McDonald's as the pirates of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla re-create the fictitious sea battle between their crew and the City of Tampa. (The city has lost every year since 1904, setting the stage for the pirates' "takeover" along Bayshore Boulevard in the annual Gasparilla parade.)

The entire route of the children's parade will be wired with sound for the 23-minute show, which will be accompanied by a musical soundtrack. The show also will be broadcast live on WTVT Channel 13.

Why go: The zoo welcomes two special brothers -- a pair of Malayan tigers -- with a festive celebration featuring music by Radio Disney AM 1380, treats, and activities. The first 200 guests today will receive a plush tiger while supplies last.

Why go: The Tampa Theatre presents the 1956 Alfred Hitchcock thriller "The Man Who Knew Too Much," starring James Stewart and Doris Day. Rated PG.

Where/when: Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Rd, Sunday 5 p.m.

Why go: Skipper’s Smokehouse presents the genre-busting jamband 3rd Stone, which blends rock, afro-beat, reggae and funk, with the reggae-centric jamband Burnin Smyrnans.
