Yoga that Won't Bust Your Budget

Finding classes that won't leave your body mind spirit and wallet empty.

In-studio discounts, free yoga classes at libraries and online coupon sites have helped many of us to fit yoga into our tight budgets. But there are more options to keep your yoga lifestyle affordable.

Yoga helps train our minds how to live for the joy of anticipation of the unknown.  But we have to be practical in our modern lives, and the cost of living is going up every year, along with the cost of wellness and fitness for ourselves.

When I first started practicing yoga, one of the problems I encountered was cost — and that was before this "recession" hit. Now it's virtually impossible for the average Jane or Joe to afford a daily yoga practice in a studio setting.

In yoga, we learn to let go of worry and dread, to stay present and to find inner peace. But when looming  bills are piling up, it's hard to choose yoga over the light bill, right?

Thankfully, there are options to help you fit yoga into your budget.

Checking out a yoga studio's website is the best place to start. Or, do it the old fashioned way and call the studio. Also, always the Facebook pages of these studios for deals.

  • Yoga Tampa Bay also is a great resource to find yoga class schedules,  events and deals.
  • Living Social and Groupon  occasionally runs deals for everything, so look here when you are searching for a yoga deal. There are sometimes participating studios in the area running deals outside of their own websites.
  • The best online deal I've spotted so far comes from Passport to Prana Pass. Basically, you purchase a card at a participating studio and activate it online.  For $30, you can take one class at each of the 24 participating studios!  That is an awesome deal.  The card pays for itsself after two visits to most of the studios in Tampa.

Here are some cool urban Downtown Tampa locations that are reasonably priced and worth a mention:

  • The Tampa Museum of Art  offers yoga every every Saturday 9:30 a.m. Taught by Inspire Yoga, the class is $8 for museum members and $12 for non-members. Take a great yoga class inside one of the galleries or out on the sencond floor terrace  overlooking the Hillsborough River and the University of Tampa.  After class, view the current exhibit and some Saturdays you can even get a private tour!
  • Clare Seng teaches a lunch time yoga class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. in the scenic Tampa City Centre at  the downtown Verizon Building on the 30th floor. It offers amazing views of Harbour-Davis Islands and the channel. What a way to spend your lunch hour! The price is $10 per class or a package of six classes for $50.

Check your local libraries and yoga studios for free or "free-by-donation" classes. I've written previously about free classes for children and seniors at various libraries throughout  Hillsborough County.

When it comes to working our yoga into a tight family budget, it can be a challenge. I hope some of these options help you on your path.

 Namaste!
