Although known for its holiday food drives, Metropolitan Ministries does more than simply feed the homeless. Begun in 1972, this charity's mission is to care for struggling families and individuals by helping them find food, clothing, shelter -- and self-sufficiency.

Its complex runs the width of a city block, between 2301 N. Tampa St. and 2010 N. Florida Ave. About 140 people, including an average of 90 children, live here for a few weeks or more than a year, depending on their needs. The site offers the children schooling and pediatric care while also helping their parents with counseling, money management and other services.

In addition, Metropolitan Ministries partners with other charitable organizations to provide about 2,000 hot meals per day to the homeless throughout Hillsborough, Pinellas and Polk counties.

And that's not all: In keeping with its mission to help people achieve their potential, Metropolitan Ministries is an offical GED/literacy site staffed with two Hillsborough County teachers. It also offers job counseling, resume writing and other employment services to all community residents.
