Orangutans Hunt for Easter Treats

Today visitors to Lowry Park Zoo can watch the orangutans search for treats stashed by zoo keepers throughout their exhibit.

Think your kids are more clever than orangutans when it comes to Easter egg hunting? The primates at will make a case for themselves today during the zoo's annual Orangutan Egg Hunt.

Zoo spokesperson Rachel Nelson said at approximately 10:45 a.m. zoo keepers will play Easter bunny by stashing hard-boiled eggs, bonnets, baskets, fruit, dried fruit, and nuts throughout the orangutan exhibit. Then at 11 a.m. the orangutans will be let back in to hunt for the goodies.

"In addition to enjoying the treats," said Nelson in a release, "the orangutans benefit from the challenge that offers the animals incentives to explore and interact with their habitat. One of many enrichment activities, this rewarding task helps stimulate the highly intelligent animals, both mentally and physically."
