With two recently confirmed cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in the area, Seminole Heights residents are being asked to stay on high alert for the dangers mosquitoes can pose.
That particular mosquito-borne disease can be especially dangerous and even deadly, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Preventing bites and keeping mosquito populations down are critical lines of defense against these critters and the diseases they spread, the Hillsborough County Health Department has said.
But, just what is it about some people that causes them to be more prone to mosquito bites than others?
As it turns out, a number of factors can come into play to make the biting buggers pass up one potential snack for another.
Beer drinkers, as it turns out, are also particularly tempting treats for mosquitoes.
“Just a single 12-ounce bottle of beer can make you more attractive to the insects,” the Smithsonian reported. The why behind that, however, remains a “mystery.”
