Health Mutt and Mermaid Tavern Host Dog Benefit

Yappy Hour at the Mermaid will benefit the Florida Great Pyrenees Club, which will have representatives of the breed on hand for adoption.

Two new Seminole Heights independent businesses are teaming up Thursday night to help the Florida Great Pyrenees Club find good homes for dogs of the majestic breed. pet market is hosting its first Yappy Hour from 7 to 9 p.m. at the , 6719 N Nebraska Ave.

“Every time we do a Yappy Hour we're going to feature a different (dog) rescue," said Health Mutt owner Kendra Bailey.

At tonight's Yappy Hour Bailey will have a table set up to sell Yappy Hour bandanas, Beer Bones (dog biscuits made from spent brewing grains), and carob-dipped Bully Stick dog treats. Health Mutt will donate $1 from these sales to the FGPC.

Health Mutt will also raffle a 30 pound bag of Taste of the Wild premium dog food, with 100 percent of those proceeds going to the FGPC. The club will also raffle items, and the 3 Suns Organic Bistro food truck will also be on hand.

The FGPC will have Great Pyrenees dogs at the event available for adoption.

According to its website, the non-profit FGPC was formed in April 1998, and now has over 200 members throughout Florida.

According to a Wikipedia article, the breed is a type of livestock guardian dog that has been used for hundreds of years by shepherds, especially those of the Basque region in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain. They feature thick white coats and can grow to 120 pounds.

Bailey said Health Mutt's next Yappy Hour will benefit a labrador retriever rescue.
