Free Comic Book Day is Today in Seminole Heights

Green Shift Music and Comics in Seminole Heights is participating in this day devoted to comic books that is meant to encourage appreciation for different series and heroes.

If you are a fan of comic books or want to encourage children to read the original form of The Avengers, Spiderman, Batman and more, you'll be happy to hear that Free Comic Book Day is today (Saturday, May 4). Free Comic Book Day, created in 2002, always falls on the first Saturday in May. Participating comic book specialty stores across America give away at least one free comic book to anyone who visits their shop that day.  Retailers, publishers, suppliers and distributors work together to make certain comics free in an effort to reward comic book veterans and draw in new fans on this day. Starbucks Happy Hour Starts Friday

The coffee shops will host a pre-summer celebration with some cool drinks at half price.

Starbucks fans may think that every hour is happy hour at their favorite neighborhood coffee shop. But Starbucks will host a pre-summer Happy Hour celebration starting Friday, offering Frappuccinos at half their regular price. Happy Hour times are from 3-5 p.m., with the special running through May 12. Any Frappuccino drink is half price, such as the Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino or the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino or the Caffee Vanilla Frappuccino. Urban Art Project Changing Exteriors of Local Businesses

Murals and artwork could change the look of many local businesses such as Ella's Americana Folk Art Cafe and Reservations Gourmet-to-Go.

In an effort to integrate public art into the Seminole Heights landscape, the Seminole Heights Urban Art Partners are organizing a colorful movement in the historic central Tampa community. Urban Art Attack, a plan created by community members and business owners, hopes to revamp the architectural feel of Seminole Heights using aesthetic incentives like wall art on structures around town. According to the Urban Art Attack website, projects in the works include wall or yard art at local haunts like Ella's Americana Folk Art Cafe, Southern Brewing & Winemaking and Reservations Gourmet-to-Go. Customer Appreciation Day at Health Mutt on June 1

Once a year, customers at Health Mutt in Seminole Heights are honored with a day geared toward them. This year, Customer Appreciation Day will be from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 at the store, 6116 N. Central Avenue. During the event, customers can expect a 15 percent off discount on items, goodie bags for the first 50 customers, raffle prizes and vendors who will talk pet nutrition and give away samples, said owner Kendra Bailey. "We are letting people know to bring their furry friends with them so they can taste test the food samples," Bailey said. InVision Tampa Unveils Report for Nebraska-Hillsborough Corridor

InVision Tampa is a project using federal grant money to revamp parts of Tampa, from downtown to Ybor City and the Nebraska-Hillsborough avenue corridor. Workshops are being held this week to solicit community feedback about the report.

Efforts to create a pedestrian-friendly downtown and maximize economic development for businesses is continuing momentum with InVision Tampa - a project using federal grant money to revamp parts of the city - unveiling an "Issues and Opportunities Report" this week for the Nebraska-Hillsborough corridor. The report, which shows the findings of a consultants research and ideas expressed by citizens during charrettes and online forums about Nebraska and Hillsborough avenues, will be discussed during community design workshops on Tuesday, April 30 and Thursday, May 2. At 5:30 p.m. on April 30, Buckhorn will meet with students from Middleton High, who took on specific areas of the Nebraska-Hillsborough corridor and worked with InVision Tampa …

Mayor Bob Buckhorn Hosting Food Truck Fiesta Downtown

The fiesta is on the first Wednesday of every month at Lykes Gaslight Park.

This just in from Ali Glisson at the City of Tampa: Mayor Buckhorn’s May Food Truck Fiesta will be on Wednesday, May 1, and will feature new food trucks.  The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Lykes Gaslight Square Park on Franklin Street between Madison Street and Kennedy Boulevard. In conjunction with the Tampa Downtown Partnership, the Mayor’s Food Truck Fiesta was first launched in Lykes Gaslight Square Park in November 2011. New Restaurant, Rooster & The Till, Planned for Florida Avenue

A former executive chef at Cafe Dufrain is one of the partners in this new venture, according to TBO.com.

A new restaurant featuring some well-known names in Tampa is said to be coming to Seminole Heights in June. The Rooster & The Till is targeting a June opening date at 6500 Florida Ave., according to an article on TBO.com. That puts them in the same building as the S.E. Mattis at the Heights Barbershop. But don't worry, the barbershop isn't going anywhere. They're just getting a new neighbor. "Ferrell Alvarez, formerly executive chef at Café Dufrain on Harbor Island, is partnering with Ty Rodriguez and Brian Lampe," Jeff Houck writes on TBO.com. It is disappointing they left the building so plain after all the concerns expressed. The FD on MLK and 15th has a better look. I would like to see it turn each of the blank wall sections into a false front of small shops that represent their departments such as pet supplies, drug store, hardware and clothing store.
