Walmart, Dick’s Pull Assault Weapons: Is it Enough?

In light of the Newtown, Conn., shootings major retailers across the county are pulling certain assault weapons from their shelves. The National Rifle Association has even issued a statement that it’s ready to make “meaningful contributions.”

As the cry for tighter gun control laws sounds louder throughout America and right here in Tampa Bay, major retailers are reacting.

Walmart has announced plans to stop selling the Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine M4A3 Rifle through its online store.

That particular assault rifle is in the same family of guns as the one Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old shooter in the Newtown massacre, reportedly used in the massacre, the Huffington Post reports.

Dick’s Sporting Goods, which has a number of Tampa Bay area locations, has also announced a shift in its stocking preferences. That store has suspended the sale of some semi-automatic weapons from all stores in the chain.

In a statement, the store said it ordered the move out of respect for the victims and families of Newtown. Friday’s shooting left 20 children, all between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adults, plus the shooter, dead.

“We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community,” a statement on the Dick’s website said.

Locally, U.S. Rep Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, is calling on Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons immediately. She joins a chorus of others, including President Barack Obama, who say now is the time to act.

The National Rifle Association has even ended its post-Newtown silence, issuing a vague statement that it is ready to make “meaningful contributions.” The Second Amendment rights lobbying group plans a press conference on Friday to elaborate on the statement.

Here’s what we’d like to know Tampa Bay: Do you think the actions of Walmart and Dick’s go far enough? Are politicians just saber rattling or do you think the time for an all-out ban has come? What would you consider a “meaningful contribution” from the NRA? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

How about baseball bats (husband beats wife to death in Polk County), matches (arson), cars (hit and run). It's not the tools (of death), it's the sick demented people who kill. Want some tough gun laws? Charge an automatic additional 15 years to a crime committed with a gun. No appeal, no plea bargaining, no liberal judges to ameliorate the sentence handed down by a jury.

Just so our liberal readers have some comparisons. The China massacre was 30 people injured by the meat cleaver wheeling psycho, 7 children killed and 2 adults. I’m sure Amazon or Bed, Bath and Beyond will be announcing their band on meat cleavers any day now.
Banning assault rifles because a lunatic goes out and kills a bunch of poor kids is a crazy as banning gasoline because someone has been drinking and driving and runs a school bus off the road and kills everyone on board. Life sucks but there is no easy fix people. Talk of banning guns is a knee jerk reaction and is like putting a band-aid on a decapitation!
Did you know?
32,367 people died in car crashes in 2011
9,878 due to DUI
8,583 shooting deaths
257 from assault rifles
2,064 from bladed type weapons
440,000 deaths due to tobacco use
So according to the above statistics it would appear we are going after the wrong ban. Maybe we need to start with tobacco, and then we can move on to maybe alcohol and then finally cars.

No the only Dicks are here in America, sorry about the pun, Corporate reactions are such a joke, until secondary markets are regulated and the NRA grows up and gets on board with solutions instead of rhetoric the whole industry is at risk of going under. Pretty soon you wont be able to target practice with twinkies and not because Wonder Bread went under. It will be interesting to see what the NRA has to say Friday, some say they planned that date just in case it was the end of the world so they would not have to admit they are wrong and that guns do kill people!

In our mad dash to judgment and condemnation of assault weapons following the horrific shooting in Connecticut, I wonder if we’re not attacking the wrong end of the problem. I seriously doubt we’re going to stop violence by banning assault weapons.
I wonder if we are failing to seriously deal with conditioning the minds of our children against the kind of violence seen in Connecticut, Colorado (Columbine in 1999 by 2 students) and elsewhere. I have yet to see any serious conversation taking place about the very violent video games, television programs, movies and other media promoting extreme violence and mayhem.
In Monday’s edition of the Tampa Bay Times, I noticed a promotional flyer from the Sports Authority offering a “kid’s” air soft rifle on sale at $29.95 - a close replica of the AR-15 used in the Connecticut shooting. They also offer a replica of a Colt .45 semi-auto pistol and M4 kit. Do I hear anything about retailers pulling these kid-friendly assault weapon imitations from their shelves? Do I hear Obama or any of the other political talking heads addressing the kind of “brainwashing” our kids are receiving through thoughtless retailers, Hollywood producers and broadcast media? Until we look at both ends and all sides of the problem of why we see kids (and others) killing kids, we are succumbing to a political knee-jerk reaction by only banning assault weapons.

Harvey,
So now lets blame the media. I find that to be an easy cop-out for people that don't want to take the responsiblity that we should as adults in raising young minds. The word "no" is a very useful tool. Also explaining what real and fake is. If the movie is rated "R" maybe 6 year old little Billy shouldn't be allowed to watch it. On Thanksgiving Morning I went to see the Movie "SkyFall" which is rated "R" (I believe). There was a father their with his daughter who couldn't be more than 5 in the audience. During the shooting at the Batman Movie in CO there were children (3-8) at a midnight showing of a PG-13 or R rated movie. Don't blame the media, blame the lack of parents standing up to their children.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Guns just make it a LOT easier for people killing to run up massive body counts in rapid time. Guns make mass killings possible.
How many people would be dead in Arora Colorodo if the crazy just had a knife? How many kids in CT would still have their lives ahead of them if the wacko had to reload every six shots? People kill, not guns, but guns make it easier for them to get the job done like they do.

I can't speak for Dick's or any other sporting goods stores, but when Walmart pulls something off the shelves there are none in the back room. All recalls are sent back to the manufacturers and all UPC will not work. Big label on Cash registers state RECALL and will not ring up the item. This I know as a Walmart department manager.
If one of the principals or teachers had carried, the man could have been killed himself instead of those brave people who threw themselves unarmed in front of an assault rifle. The problem is not the type of gun. The problem is the fore thought to deter the problem happening before it happened. Isn't interesting that 11 armed guards protect our presidents child and our own children are left unprotected because of a few people that are afraid of guns? I grew up in an age when students brought guns to school in pickup trucks in a thing called a gun rack. Never had a problem back then. People need to think and protect their own. I would rather shoot that wait on a cop if my children or I were threatened. You think the gunman will wait for the cops to arrive?

I respect immensely the retailors decision to pull the sale of these weapons, it is at least a step towards movement on the gun control issue. It is a very benevolent gesture of their sorrow at what has transpired and a show of respect to the families of those who were lost. I really don't think the leaders who crafted the constitution ever envisioned a world where the Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine M4A3 Rifle would be neededfor protection. At least they took an action rather than just talk about it.

Of course we don't want weapons of ANY KIND in the hands of criminals. However, all gun sales are monitored and applied for the the above mentioned stores. You have to pass a background check. Do you think the local hoodlum will apply for a gun? No! He/She will get their weapon illegally, as they always have and they always will. Will this make a difference? I don't think so. Makes me want to get one just for protection against THEM! Just sayin'

Actually Rowan, there are several types of Point of Sales that a person doesn't legally need a background check before purchasing a firearm. And their ownership would be just as legal as it you purchased them from a store that requires a background check. So no, not all are gotten illegally.

You are right on the money Rowan! This generation wants everything NOW. We did not get to this point over night and we are not going to fix it with a simple ban on assault rifles or a ban on anything. We will always have bad people doing bad things and they will come up with better ways of doing it as time goes on. We must be able to protect ourselves and we can only do that if we protect our rights.

Did they stop selling 9mm pistols too? That's what was used to kill those kids. 'Bushmaster Patrolman' sounds scary and macho (which is why they call it that) but the 'assault rifle' was in the shooter's trunk. Maybe Goodyear should suspend the sale of spare tires too. If this was more than just corporate attention whorng they would suspend the sale of all firearms, not just the ones that get the misinformed soccer moms in a tizzy. STAY SCARED AMERICA!

The writers of the Constitution envisioned a world in which our own government would get too big for its britches and tell us what to eat, steal our wealth, and tell us which guns we can and can't own. Sound familiar? The constitutional purpose of a high capacity semi auto rifle is to punch multiple holes in a tyrant with speed and efficiency.

Just the facts. Most of these massacres have one thing in common - they are "gun free" zones, meaning, by law, people are not allowed to protect themselves. Banning any kind of gun will not protect the innocent. And a little perspective, tobacco kills over 500,000 Americans EVERY year, or over 1000 every day. That is the equivalent of 50 Sandy Hooks every day, 365 days a year. Show me a law that will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally impaired, keep us safe, and comply with the Constitution and I will support it.

James Johannessen

Guns are NEVER THE PROBLEM - It is always the folks holding the guns - pulling the trigger. And Shut up already about muskets and militias - the founders knew this government would one day need to be reset and if we had no weapons we would not be able to do what must be done. Is there a law that will keep anyone from speeding? Laws only work for people who OBEY laws - anytime you want to disobey a law you may do so - and so to those who are committed to breaking laws - laws taking weapons away only disarm the lawful citizen. Assault rifle bans are for idiots - I can do as much with a Browning lever action and a handful of magazines - none of which hold more than 4 rounds per clip. Sure I may need to change more often but the end result would be the same as if I had a 30 round magazine - most people who shoot understand. I understand it feels good to say Ban Assault Rifles - Better to end universal suffrage.

Next thing you know, shoppers will be bringing their assault weapons to Black Friday shopping events and slay everyone who either gets in their way, or someone who buys the very last "must have" toy from the shelf. You can argue gun control all you want to but it doesn’t solve the problem that caused the shooting in the first place. Society, schools and our sense of community has broken down. The people that wend off the deep end and committed these terrible atrocities where all mental ill and felt lost or shunned from their communities. You’re not going to end mental illness and you’re not going to stop killings with more gun control. We as Americans need to refocus on our communities and our relationships with nor neighbors, friends and families.
