Library History Roadshow Stops at Seminole Heights Branch Library

patrons shared their memories and photographs of the library located at 4711 Central Ave. during a on Sunday, May 6.

The Library History Roadshow makes stops at library branches throughout Hillsborough County to gather memorabilia and document the libraries' rich past in preparation for the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Libraries’ 100th anniversary in 2014.

"The history is really the effect the libraries had on the people that used them," said Margaret Rials, Chief Librarian for Tampa-Hillsborough County Libraries.

The project began in 2011 and will continue through 2013 leading up to the anniversary, and all information gathered will be accessible on the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative website. The system has 25 branches, and the road show will visit all of them over the course of two years. The next event will take place in Ybor City on Saturday, June 23, 2012. 

"A library today is more than just for books," said Pat Benjamin, President of the Friends of the Seminole Heights Branch Library. "We want it to be an extension of your home, a gathering and meeting place."

The Seminole Heights Branch Library was founded in 1927 as one of seven city libraries. It relocated several times until 1965, when it settled on Central Avenue. This heavily-used neighborhood , tripling in size to meet the needs of the community.
