Holiday Shopping: Spending Limits For Kids’ Presents?
How much is too much to spend on children and teens? We want to hear your thoughts Tampa Bay!
As the holiday shopping season goes into full swing, some people are maxing out their credit cards to pay for presents and others are setting budgets and sticking with them.
Scour just about any Facebook stream or stop in a local coffee shop and chances are you’ll hear parents debating the merits of setting spending limits. Or, you'll hear them lamenting about just how much they've already spent.
The ideas for a perfect limit do seem to vary rather greatly. Some parents say $100 per child is more than enough. Others tend to lean toward much more generous figures. After all, there’s nothing like seeing a child’s eyes light up as they unwrap gift after gift.
And that’s what we want to hear from you about Tampa Bay! Do you set spending limits on the presents you buy for your kids? How much is too much? How much is too little?

My granddaughters go into the dollar store and are allowed to choose all their presents there. Christmas Eve is always a delight as their eyes shine when we open their gifts. I took my one granddaughter once when her sister was being born so Mommy couldn't take her. We were there for hours for she spent so much time deliberating on what was the perfect gift for each person. Putting so much thought into it is so sweet and it is easy for the child with the ability to choose anything they want in the one store. The girls are 3 and 8 now. I don't know how long this will do, but children love to give and the money amount doesn't matter to them. It's the choosing of the perfect treasure that is important. It teaches them to think and compare, too.

Christmas is not about gimme-greed; it is about rejoicing in the birth of our Savior. $100.00 plus something special to wear to midnight mass is plenty for kids except in the case of a special present such as a bicycle. It is good to have kids participate in giving to very poor children, orphans in Haiti, and poor senior citizens who live alone. Never have them give anything used! New presents only, and handmade items og nice quality. Kids can share in baking for others. Since many senior citizens have diabetes, I like baking loaves of not-sweet raised yeast bread for them (not sugary quick breads or cookies).
