Debby Keeps Tampa Bay on High Alert

A tornado watch continues for most of the Tampa Bay area through this afternoon.

Sunday’s heavy rains and frequent tornado warnings aren’t a thing of the past. The National Weather Service says the entire Tampa Bay area is in for another bumpy ride today courtesy of Tropical Storm Debby.

The tornado watch that was in effect for most of the region has been extended once again until 2 p.m. Monday. It includes such counties as Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Sarasota and Manatee.

A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for tornado development.

Yesterday counties throughout the Tampa area saw their tornado watches turn into warnings as multiple funnel clouds were reported. Some areas also saw heavy flooding and experienced power losses.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service are calling for a 90 percent chance of thunderstorms today and have issued coastal flood warnings and flood warnings for many counties. A tropical storm watch remains in effect for the Tampa Bay area.

Forecasters say Debby has weakened, but remains stationary. That means she’s positioned to dump more bad weather on the Bay area for at least another day. Debby's current track has her striking somewhere in the Panhandle later this week. The storm is expected to weaken further as the week wears on.

A look ahead in weather shows little improvement in our area over the next few days. Rain chances remain high through Wednesday.

For more information about the storm, visit the National Weather Service online.

To keep up with hazardous weather warnings, visit the weather service's severe weather summary page.

I live in sea pines in Hudson and the roads are flooded in both exit directions. The tide has not dropped below normal high tide and the water has no where to go

Hi Catherine, we haven't had any deaths in the Tampa Bay area thank God! Most places of business are open, but a lot of major roads are inaccessible. We'll keep you posted.

How are the beaches holding up? I see that Pass-a-Grille beach is basically gone.
We are thinking of coming down in two weeks and I wonder if Indian Rocks beach has been hit hard like that.

It's been hit hard, but not nearly as bad as Pass-A-Grille. Pass-A-Grille had a tornado run through it so they've suffered more damage than the other beaches.

Hi Keith, I'm not sure about Indian Rocks. Pinellas Beaches Patch has been covering all the localized damage over there. I'll check with that editor to see if there's any news.

Thanks to both of you. We usually go to the same place when we come down and I think the owners would be pretty straight with us. I just wanted some info from a source with no financial interest before I called them.
