Deaf, Mute Man Robbed of $9 at Motel on Nebraska Avenue

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning, according to the Tampa Police Department.

A man who authorities described as "deaf and mute" was robbed of $9 during an incident that occurred early Wednesday morning on Nebraska Avenue, according to a report from the Tampa Police Department.

Here's what happened, according to a report from Tampa police:

A man later identified as Lewis Carr, 31, approached the unidentified victim in the parking lot of the Casa Loma Motel, 6500 N. Nebraska Avenue. Carr tried to engage the victim in a conversation, but the victim is deaf and mute, and was unable to respond.

That's when things took a turn for the worse.

Carr threw the victim to the ground and reached inside his pocket, stealing $9. A sergeant parked across the street heard commotion and came to the area of the incident to see what was going on. Carr was walking southbound on Nebraska Avenue near Fern Street.

Meanwhile, another officer arrived to perform sign language with the victim and take him to Carr's location where he was positively identified.

The money was not recovered, and there were no injuries.

Carr of 3101 Grand Pavilion Drive Apt. 103, was again charged with robbery. Authorities say he's faced the charge before.
